Abstract

Presents a case of a variety of synesthesia or gustatory audition. The S is a young woman, who had certain gustatory sensations in response to certain words. The S suffered from 2 sense defects - a slight deafness, and anosmia. A list of gustatory equivalents of spoken words was obtained from the S. It was found that all the possible qualities of gustatory, cutaneous, and tactual-motor experiences were represented in the list. These synesthesias were experienced by the S in the ordinary course of listening. Evidence from examinations of various kinds suggested that the case was not that of mere suggested imagery. It was not possible to explain the case in terms of psychological or physiological theory. It is suggested that the 2 sensory defects of the S might be related to the condition.
