Abstract

Background: Specific phobia is a strong, persisting fear of an object or situation that always occurs upon exposure to the feared stimulus. Many phobias respond well to in vivo exposure therapy; however, it is often hindered by high dropout rates and low treatment acceptance. Homoeopathy can be regarded as an alternative treatment for specific phobia.Literature is scarce on the efficacy of homoeopathy in treating specific phobias. The case series aims to scale up individualized homoeopathic medicine in alleviating the symptoms and enhancing the quality of life in specific phobic patients. Methods:This case series presents three adult cases of specific phobia treated exclusively with individualized homoeopathic medicines without any supportive therapies. The Consultant Psychiatrist of the Institution diagnosed all the cases. Patients were assessed using the APA Severity Measures for Specific Phobia—Adult scale and World Health Organization Quality of Life – BREF (WHO-QOL Bref). The homoeopathic medicines prescribed were Natrum muriaticum, Causticum, and Phosphorus. The Modified Naranjo Criteria were used to evaluate the causal relationship between treatment and outcomes. Individualized homoeopathic treatment resulted in substantial symptom reduction, with SMSP-A scores decreasing from 34, 36, and 34 to 3, 5, and 0, respectively, over 12 months. The treatment also led to a marked improvement in cognitive and behavioconsentural functioning and an overall better quality of life. Conclusion: The overall assessment of the cases showed a positive role in homoeopathy, as they were exclusively managed by individualized homoeopathic medicine. However, more extensive research is needed to prove the effectiveness of individualized homoeopathy in specific phobias.
