Abstract

The question of the place of the Arabic language in the current international scene brings into play a number of dimensions with variable, shifting interactions. Should we speak of one or several Arabic languages? Along the same lines, should we consider that there are one or several Arab worlds? What are the interactions between the Arabic language and cultural aspects, particularly the Muslim religion, and politics? Is it conceivable to dissociate linguistic aspects from political dimensions? What are the relations between the Arabic language, Arabity, Arabism and the Arabic-speaking world?
