The right of the elderly to adequate housing: housing alternatives for an active and participatory ageing process

Abstract

Population ageing poses a series of challenges that public policies must address, such as active and healthy ageing and the quality of health and care. The progressive loss of the physical and mental faculties that are inherent to the ageing process and the use that the elderly make of urban space and their homes require the programming of public policies that promote active ageing that optimize opportu-nities and improve the quality of life, improving accessibility to public spaces and the home itself. The design of the urban environment and housing must be considered from an integral approach, combining physical aspects with others linked to interaction and ageing in place. For this reason, new typologies such as senior cohousing and coliving or in-tergenerational housing are making headway in our coun-try as an alternative to traditional residences for the elderly.
