Abstract

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) identifies the provision of best possible welfare for all nonhuman animals within its Accredited Zoos and Aquariums, Certified Related Facilities, and Approved Non-Member Participants as one of its highest priorities. A variety of dynamic mechanisms have been established to ensure that AZA members proactively identify animal welfare as a top priority. The AZA Accreditation Standards stipulate that member institutions must develop a clear process for identifying and addressing animal welfare concerns. The AZA Animal Welfare Committee strives to educate and engage members in using and applying animal welfare assessment tools to continually improve the welfare of animals in their care; identify and encourage the devel- opment of animal welfare research projects and assessment tools; identify and address internal and external animal welfare issues; and facilitate the publication of Animal Care Manuals for all taxa, which identify the highest standards of animal care and welfare that can be applied consistently across our community. The AZA Scientific Advisory Groups collaborate with the greater academic and science communities to increase the use of science in animal welfare. The collaborative outcomes of these mechanisms ensure that zoo and aquarium animal welfare research needs, directions, developments, and advancements are continuously augmented.
