Abstract

Stunting reflects chronic undernutrition during the most critical periods of growth and development in early life. A thorough effort is required to support stunting situation analysis in West Sumba Regency. Almost 47.8% of the children under five years of age were stunted in West Sumba Regency. Thus, this is important to understand the factors contribute to high prevalence of stunting to overcome the stunting problem in in West Sumba Regency. This study aimed to examine the relationship between maternal and household as a determinant factor of stunting on infant and young child feeding practice using the data obtained from a survey study in 2019 on families with stunted children in West Sumba Regency. We conducted a quantitative research study with a cross-sectional design, involving 81 households in Tebara, Loko Ry, and Malata villages of West Sumba Regency. The mothers were selected using purposive sampling method. Respondents were interviewed using a semi structured questionnaire on infant and young child feeding practices generated in Kobo Toolbox application. The relationship among variables with perceptions and practice around infant and young child feeding practice was analysed statistically using SPSS software package with the P value for statistical significance being set at <0.05. Pearson’s Chi Square was used to test significance and associations between categorical variables. The results showed that there was a significant association between mother education status and knowing the importance of various protein sources for 6-23 month infants (p=0.011). The significant association was also found between mother education status and the awareness of infants nutritional status (p<0.001). This study also revealed that there was no significant difference between household income of under IDR 500K and above IDR 500K (p>0.05). This study confirmed that mother education status was an important factor to determine perception around infant and young child feeding practice among households with stunting children.
