Abstract

There are four groups of active fishermen in Padangbai Beach. Their members are part of a social network that actively interacts to meet social and economic needs. In 1999, a pier was built and named after Padangbai People's Port. This port has impacted the village economy, an essential means to maintain these fishermen's existence, activities, and social groups. This research examines the role of social interaction in developing this port and its contribution to the economic development of the Padangbai Village. This study uses a descriptivequalitative method with a case study. Study results indicate that the Padangbai Port provides a place for fishermen and their groups to interact socially, where they can conduct various self-development activities that contribute to the economic development of the Padangbai Village. Most are done in manners where direct and intense social contacts and communications are profoundly chosen as a way to associate among fishermen.
