Abstract
The western Pacific has produced more than 75 percent of the marginal basins found on the Earth today. The formation of marginal basins has been left unsolved outside the elegant framework of plate tectonics. The solution of the problem should be hidden in the great assortment of marginal basins in the western Pacific and in their evolutionary history.
