Abstract

It is estimated that the human population will grow to about 10 billion in the next three decades. This growth will likely lead to a 60% increase in demand for food, requiring new and urgent production technologies, distribution logistics, rational use of water resources, and changes in dietary habits (Imathiu, 2019). A greater demand for food leads to an increase in production, which will in turn result in a very significant expansion in agriculture in the coming years. This will give rise to environmental concerns such as deforestation, more greenhouse gas emissions, and increased use of water and other natural resources (Van Huis et al., 2013).
