Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory connective tissue disorder of unknown cause that can involve joints, kidneys, serous surfaces and vessel walls. It occurs predominantly in young women. Diagnosis requires clinical and serological criteria. Treatment of severe ongoing active disease requires corticosteroids, often hydroxychloroquine and sometimes immunosupressants.
