Abstract

Mycorrhizae of horticultural plants currently being cultivated in Japan were investigated. Endomycorrhizas were formed by almost all kinds of fruit trees, vegetables and ornamental plants examined with the exception of stock (Matthiola incana). Vesicles 50-100æ diam. and arbuscules developed. In citrus (Satsuma mandarin grafted on Poncirus trifoliata) the vesicles were small (10 æm). Ericaceous (Rhododendron) and orchidaceous (Cymbidium) mycorrhizas had smaller, septate hyphae, coiled in cortical cells, and no vesicles or arbuscules.
