Abstract
The present status of uterine cervical incompetence and associated risk factors, are analyzed. Transvaginal ultrasonography allowed the documentation that the funnelization and the distal shortage of the uterine cervix, are strong predictors for preterm delivery. Cervical cerclage has been proposed as a suitable therapeutic indicator, in those pregnants presenting with these changes during the second trimester. The different approaches related to the surgical technique, to the opportunity of the operation and the controversies about the efficacy in front to the more recent reports of the literature. Also our experience with the follow-up with transvaginal ultrasonography in patients already submitted to cervical cerclage.
