Abstract

The Life Environment project WALPHY, co-funded by the European Union, aimed to improve hydromorphology of the Bocq catchment, a tributary of the Meuse. Longitudinal continuity, which concerns the free movement of fish and sediments, was strongly affected by a large number of barriers (weirs, culverts, ...). In order to restore this continuity, different rehabilitation projects have been undertaken, such as weir removal, bypass channel, pre-barrages, fish passes or rock ramp. In addition, operations such as remeandering, flow diversification or creating fish habitats were also conducted to restore lateral connectivity. These projects have been the subject of a scientific monitoring based on geomorphological, hydromorphological and ecological analyzes. Standardized and reproducible methods have been developed to compare the situation before and after rehabilitation. Application of these methods showed that microhabitats survey associated with the analysis of macroinvertebrates and fish provide good indicators for the post-project monitoring. Two examples of pre- and postrestoration studies are presented: the a weir removal at Spontin and the a remeandering of a straightened river channel at Emptinale. The results show a good evolution of biological indicators.
