Abstract

The BT Environment City project has produced a publication, the 'Stepping stones', to spread environmental awareness and action, in line with the pressing need for a holistic approach to solve environmental problem. A holistic approach demands that everyone share the responsibility of ensuring a sustainable development. 'Stepping stones' gives examples of this practice, from which parallels can be drawn, to provide some initial steps in the pursuit of sustainability. Specifically, it gives examples of the four environment cities of Leeds, Leicester, Middlesbrough and Petersborough (UK), with which other cities can compare and contrast their own work. The Environment City program centered on 8 Specialist Working Groups, each responsible for the areas of energy, transport, waste and pollution, food and agriculture, economy and work, built environment, natural environment and the social environment.
