Abstract

Thermokarst is developing in the boreal forests of Alaska where ice-rich discon-tinuous permafrost is thawing. Thawing destroys the physical foundation (ice-rich soil) on which boreal forest ecosystems rest causing dramatic changes in the ecosystem.
