Abstract
Introduction: Few studies looked at the relationship between the Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), postulating that RLS might in fact be an extraintestinal manifestation of Crohn's disease. However, no previous studies from Saudi Arabia attempt to replicate these associations., Aims: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of RLS in patients with IBD in Saudi Arabia., Methods: A total of 377 histopathologically proven IBD patients were compared with 1131 age and gender matched controls, both patients and controls were interviewed in the Gastroenterology & Primary Health Care clinics using the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) criteria. We assessed the severity of RLS using the IRLSSG severity scale for RLS. Clinical and laboratory data for all IBD patents retrieved from medical records., Results: We had 264 patents with Crohn's Disease (CD) and 113 with Ulcerative colitis (UC). The Prevalence of RLS was in 21.5% of IBD patients comparing to 9.7% of controls, 22.7% of CD have RLS whereas 39.5% of UC patients. In Multivariate binary logistic regression older and BMI >=30 are the most predictor factor for IBD patents to develop RLS. There were no significant differences among IBD patents with or without RLS in their TSH, Ferritin, Iron, vitamin B12, Folate and hemoglobin level., Conclusions: RLS seem to be more prevalent in IBD patents comparing to general population, older age and obesity increase risk to RLS in IBD patients, however further studies needed to confirm RLS as an extraintestinal manifestation of IBD., (C) Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, Inc.
