Abstract
Even though many distinguished taxonomical studies of the Actinomycetes have been made by Krassilnikov21) (1941), Waksman5) (1948), Waksman and Henrici51) (1953), and others, a standard and decisive classification system has not yet been established. This may be because of the manifoldness and the variability of these microorganisms as well as the lack of adequate schemes for identification. For nearly a decade, therefore, many authors, such as Pridham and Gottlieb37^ (1948), Ludwig and Hutchinson2® (1949), Hayano12) (1949), Kuroya et al.22>23) (1949-50), Okami33) (1952), Baldacci et al.1)2) (1953-4), Teillon44∗ (1953), Naganishi and Nohmi29> (19535), Hesseltine et al.14) (1954), Burkholder and Sun6) (1954), Benedict et al.3) (1955), Gause9) (1955), and Couch7) (1955), have discussed the question and tried to construct keys to make speciation and classification of the Actinomycetes more rational. As for the anti-biotic-producing Actinomycetes, systematic researches were also done by Sakai40)4I) (1954-5), Ogi31^ (1954), Waksman and Gregory48) (1954), Okami34) (1955), and others, for anti-Mycobacterial, anti-fungal Actinomycetes, Actinomycin-producing Actinomycetes, and so forth. © 1955, Applied Microbiology, Molecular and Cellular Biosciences Research Foundation.
