The formation of mathematical thinking in boys and girls in the first years of school: Opinions of teachers who teach in Panama

Abstract

This article presents an overview of the development of mathematical thinking in women and how this base is the gateway to the choice of scientific careers, where the language of expression of these is mathematical. The study carried out with small samples of girls, adolescents and young people from two countries is an approach to demystifying the idea that mathematics is better developed in boys than in girls. The study es significant, since there are no similar investigation in Bolivia or Panama that link the development of mathematical thinking in the early years of elementary and basic school. This es a pilot opinion study, presenting some data form more elaborate and in-depth research. The aim is to open the debate with some elements of discussion that, al the pedagogical and didactic level, can serve to bring girls closer to this other language of the human being: The symbolic of numbers and in this way, empower these scientific inclinations of girls.
