Bridging the Gaps: Supporting First-Generation College Students’ Multifaceted Needs

Abstract

First-generation college students (FGCSs) consistently demonstrate lower educational aspirations, academic achievement, and social capital compared to their peers. This study examined FGCSs’ challenges through a survey at a Midwestern public university. Using conventional content analysis of 93 students’ responses to open-ended questions, we explored their academic, social, and financial needs. Findings revealed that FGCSs struggled to navigate college resources and understand campus norms, showing less engagement with faculty resources, campus social life, and financial processes. We recommend stakeholder collaboration to empower FGCSs’ voices, implement faculty-peer-alumni mentorship programs, expand support networks, and provide targeted financial literacy workshops.
