Abstract

The object of this paper is to clarify how the residential areas in the large Japanese city, Osaka, developed their own distinctive characteristics in the course of industrialisation. The study covers the modern period from the Meiji Restoration (1860s) to the beginning of the Showa Era (late 1920s to 1930s). The built-up area in this period exactly corresponds to the present-day inner city area.-from English summary
