Abstract

Student engagement is important in relation to educational outcomes and overall student wellbeing. Specialist sport programs (SSPs) have several benefits relating to academic outcomes and development of life skills. This mixed methods study aimed to assess whether a relationship existed between enrolment in an SSP and overall engagement in years 7–10, as well as the benefits of being enrolled. Quantitative measures involved SSP and non-SSP students (n = 239) across four schools in the Perth Metropolitan area completing the Student School Engagement Measure which reported a total engagement score and sub-scale scores of aspirations, belonging and productivity. Generalised linear models showed SSP students had significantly higher total (p =.004), belonging (p =.011) and productivity scores (p =.003). Qualitatively, 40 students and 5 teachers participated in interviews and focus groups that examined the benefits of SSP enrolment. Findings showed SSP enrolment produces positive outcomes including increased engagement, connection to school and development of life skills.
