La manipulación del miedo y el espejo populista

Abstract

The confrontation between those for whom 20th century populism meant improved life conditions and an inclusion in national politics, and those for whom it meant losing the economic and political privileges their families had maintained for generations, has set the tone for how the populist issue has been approached since then. In line with these classical debates, many people continue to view populism as a growing threat throughout Latin America. The fact that populism is conceived in this way implies that there is an unrest due fear, which is being used as a political tool. Nevertheless, for other people, the complex phenomenon of populism includes the historical demand for genuine political and socioeconomic equality. We consider the previous aspect worthy enough to revise the historical as well as current importance of the populist movement (including its shortcomings) in a non-subjective manner. (English)
