Abstract
There is an abundance of scholarship on middle-class and elite masculinity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the notion of a male ‘flight from domesticity’. But there is little solid research on the working classes, and there is a need to connect contemporary prescriptions about masculinity with the actual practices of men of all classes for this era.
