Abstract

Stríke-slíp mobile zones are long, linear belts where the most important movements of several fault-bounded crustal blocks are horizontal. Dívergent wrenching creates transten sional (pulI-apart) basíns that aubside qu íckly , and are fllled with laterally confined sedimentary facies of the most diverse nature. Oil-window temperatures are rapidly reached by these sediments. Convergent wrenching originares transpr ession that develops a whole suite of en échelon structures along the main wrench zone. These feature s associated to historical productíon dat a from such zones make of them one of the most potential geologic environment s for hydrocarbon occurrences. A large amount of new concepts regarding the geology of strike-slip mobile zones arose during the past 30 years. Also, there has been a gradual increase in the recognition of the fundament al role played by transcurrent faults in the evolution of Brazilian sedímentary basins. Geoscientists that deal with sedimentary basins and petroleum explorationi sts must be acquaínted with the se new concepts. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overalI review and update the main especte of the geology of strike-slip mobile zones in shalIow crustal levels, where the interest for petroleum explorat íon lies.
