Abstract

The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method was used to model light scattering from objects with a complex dielectric structure. In particular, the single-cell scattering properties of two- and three-dimensional scatters were examined. The results show that the nucleus, cytoplasm, cytoplasmic organelles and melanin can affect cell scattering. Interactions, such as multiple scattering, play a significant role in tissue scattering by altering the shape of the phase function.
