Abstract
Objective: Are clear aligners comparable to fixed appliances in correcting a deep overbite? Deep overbite correction is essential to achieve ideal and predictable orthodontic results. This literature review explores the accuracy of clear aligners in correcting deep overbites. After 26 years of development, the introduction of numerous materials, attachment types and auxiliaries, this review delves into the reality of deep overbite correction with clear aligners. The aim of this paper is to summarise the current literature on deep overbite correction with clear aligners. Search Methodology: The following electronic databases/libraries were screened for relevant peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2025: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and The La Trobe University library. Results: Thirty-seven studies (including both retrospective and prospective papers) were included in the literature review. The results indicate that <50 % of the planned overbite reduction is expressed when using clear aligners. Age of the patient and incorporation of different protocols and/or attachments do not significantly influence the ability to reduce a deep overbite with clear aligners. Conclusions: The findings from this literature review recognise the shortcomings of clear aligners in correcting a deep overbite. Fixed appliances still appear to be the treatment method of choice when deep overbite correction is required as part of the overall orthodontic treatment plan.
