Abstract

According to the resolution of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of 12.09.2013, “Verbraucherbildung” is to be introduced in schools. The aim is to teach children and young people responsible consumption patterns. The following contribution first takes stock of consumer education in schools before subjecting it to criticism, which is particularly directed at the normative restriction of consumption to health and sustainability. Finally, possible tasks of consumer education are outlined. However, these are not legitimised by politically desired competence requirements as has been the case up to now, but rather by the requirements of the matter(s) of consumption.
