Abstract
In summary, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of potential therapeutic agents currently in development for smoking cessation for which nAChRs are not the primary site of action. This represents our growing understanding of the mechanisms of nicotine addiction. Animal models have played a critical role in driving much of the progress in this area and promise to reveal many new therapeutic targets for smoking cessation therapeutics over the coming years. © 2009 Expert Reviews Ltd.
