Abstract
An unpublished Study Group report presents a mathematical model for the mechanics and thermal behaviour in linear friction welding, simplifies the model and solves it numerically via shooting for 'hard' materials. The present paper considers the same basic mathematical model, uses a quadratures technique for its solution and looks at the contrasting case of 'soft' materials. The range of validity of the model and possible improvements are also considered. © The author 2012.
