Abstract

Humans most often associated botulinum toxin with poisoning after ingestion of food products infected by bacteria. In the eighties, the research carried out led to a breakthrough and discovered a very significant importance of the therapeutic application of botulinum toxin in the human body. Today, this biological potent neurotoxin has become a powerful substance with increasing clinical use. Botulinum toxin has non-covalent proteins in its structure, thanks to which it is protected against digestive enzymes, which makes it a dangerous food poison for humans. Very often, absorption from the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream causes serious disorders of the autonomic nervous system. This bacterium produces spore forms, thanks to which it maintains high survival resistance in difficult conditions. Despite its high toxicity and threat to humans as a biological weapon, today's medicine can use it in a very useful way. It is widely used in medicine and is the hope of many neuromuscular diseases. Botulinum toxin is one of the main treatments for spasticity. Also appreciated all over the world in the cosmetology industry.
