Abstract
The morbidity, mortality, and economic and social costs associated with depression in the older patient are substantial. ASHP supports efforts to ensure that older adults receive adequate screening for depression and rational antidepressant therapy when indicated. ASHP believes that pharmacists can play a key role in helping to identify patients whose depression may be drag induced, unrecognized, or undertreated. Pharmacists can assist other health care providers with drug selection, dosage decisions, and monitoring and can help educate patients and the general public about depression and antidepressant medications.
