Abstract

The author provides a brief introduction to AI and then examines the major subfields of AI that are impacting industrial automation, namely, man-machine interfaces, robotics, vision systems and expert systems, with particular emphasis on their applications. Lisp and Lisp machines are discussed, focusing on the impact that their powerful software development environments and decreasing costs will have on both the delivery of knowledge-based systems and on software development in general.
