Abstract

CO2 inclusions do not survive the heat treatment required to change the colour of corundum gems. Therefore, the presence of an unruptured CO2-bearing inclusion in a ruby or sapphire indicates natural, i.e. lack of heat treatment-enhanced, colour.-R.V.D.
