Abstract
Despite its advantages in psychometric research, Item Response Theory (IRT) has not been regularly used in the measurement of psychological constructs or social attitudes. This study used a scale of intolerance to demonstrate the usefulness of working with polytomous models of IRT in comparison with the Classical Test Theory to study attitudes. It is concluded that the advantages of the polytomous models of IRT are found not in the form in which the people are scaled or in the estimation of item parameters, but in obtaining better information of the psychometric proprieties of an instrument, information that can be used to improve the instrument.
