High-dose therapy in breast cancer: Out of favor but not out of promise

Abstract

The evidence for use of high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation for breast cancer still remains inconclusive at best. A number of prospective randomized phase III studies have been either published or presented recently or are underway in North America and Europe. It will be crucial to complete the available prospective randomized phase III study and obtain the data when all studies reach a mature status. Only then will level I evidence become available to determine the efficacy and effectiveness of high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation in breast cancer.
