Across the European Union, millions of adults and children are adversely effected by the drinking problems of a member of their family. However, in most Member States, the contribution of alcohol to family problems such as divorce and child abuse is not normally ascertained; treatment and helping services for family members are poorly developed, and relatively little attention is paid to family alcohol problems in preventative programmes. These are among the findings of a new publication 'Alcohol Problems in the Family: A Report to the European Union, which discusses the various ways in which family problems may be related to alcohol. The report, produced by EUROCARE and COFACE, and funded by the European Commission mainly focuses on the effects of problem drinking on spouses and children. It concludes with a series of recommendations for action for national governments, European Union institutions and NGOs and treatment agencies.
