Abstract

The primary aim of this research study is to assess the research competencies developed by professors of the Universidad Técnica del Norte (Ecuador). The methodology has a quantitative approach and descriptive scope. An online survey validated by five experts is applied to a sample of 229 professors to determine the research practices and competencies they promote. The results show that 81% of professors always, almost always, and occasionally implement research projects into their modules. However, professors who do not, argue three reasons: 1) research is not in their academic program, 2) lack of time, and 3) it is not part of their courses. The selection of relevant and reliable literature is the most addressed research skill. Publication writing and presentations are the least considered. In conclusion, guidelines are proposed to strengthen professor training and facilitate the integration between educational praxis and research.
