Abstract

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes is a common non-communicable disease globally. A diet rich in fibre is recommended for managing diabetes as it helps regulate blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 DM. Objective: This systematic review examines the effects of soluble fibre intake on glycemic control in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Method: The research design used is a systematic review. Articles were searched through electronic databases including PUBMED, EMBESE and SCOPUS published in the period 2014 – 2023, with criteria based on the PICO framework. The search was performed using English keywords. 10 articles that met the inclusion criteria and were deemed relevant were selected. The PRISMA flow diagram presents the results of the database search. Result: The analysis shows that 9 out of 10 articles demonstrate a correlation between the consumption of soluble fiber and glycemic control in individuals with Type 2 diabetes. High fiber intake was associated with better glycemic control in Type 2 diabetes patients compared to those with low fiber intake. Conclusion: Type 2 DM patients who do not consume sufficient daily fiber may exhibit poor glycemic control. Increasing dietary fiber intake has been consistently linked to improved glycemic control and has long-term protective effects.
