Abstract

British private and public sector organisations face an enormous security challenge in today's data-rich society. The causes of security breaches are varied and prevention has, until now, been largely unregulated. This paper looks at the security and accessibility of data sets, investigates where threats to security come from, what can be done to prevent security breaches and what can be done if a breach occurs. It also looks at industry regulation, compliance and the likely move towards compulsory notification of security breaches.
