Abstract

Recombinant DNA has rapidly expanded from the research environment into industrial and clinical laboratories. The new technology permits construction of new DNA molecules in vitro and their use for a wide variety of purposes. DNA technology will be initially marketed for infectious disease tests. DNA tests for genetic diseases and cancer will show exponential growth over the next 10 years. The new DNA technology has been compared with the monoclonal antibody technology and specific advantages and applications have been discussed. DNA technology is preferred for testing in genetic diseases, disease susceptibility, antibiotic resistance, and latent viral infections such as HIV, CMV, papilloma virus, and herpes virus.
