Abstract

The paper reviews the short- and long-term effects of modern technology on cognition. First it surveys the effect that video games and games designed with a developmental purpose have on cognitive functions, with a particular emphasis on methodological difficulties experienced in corresponding studies. This is followed by a discussion of the effect of technology on working memory, focusing on near and far transfer effects. Finally the causes of the Flynn-effect (the secular increase in IQ scores) are examined, highlighting the possible effects of modern technology. The results of the surveyed studies indicate that even though cognitive development games and working memory training might improve narrow, mostly game-specific skills, in healthy adults the existence of transfer in general and the effect of working memory training on fluid intelligence in particular need further empirical support. At the same time, ICT and the internet might alter the nature of representations and information processing.
