Abstract
This study compared short- and long-term clinical, radiographic, and owner-reported outcomes of intramedullary cross-pinning (CRP) and locked anatomical condylar/J-shaped plates (SCP) in adult cats with distal diaphyseal and supracondylar femoral fractures. Fifty cats were randomized into two groups (n=25 each). Postoperative evaluations on day 0, weeks 4–6, and month 3 assessed reduction, joint congruity, callus formation, and healing. At 12 months, owners were surveyed. CRP showed faster callus and radiographic healing, while SCP provided better anatomical stabilization and higher owner satisfaction. Pin migration was the most common CRP complication; screw loosening was seen with SCP. Limb shortening was more frequent in CRP but clinically tolerated. The findings highlight the importance of choosing implants not only by fracture type but also considering patient temperament and postoperative care for optimal outcomes.
