Abstract

Functional foods have gained great importance as a result of increasing interest in foods and beverages that promote health and disease prevention. Fermented milk beverages not only provide refreshment and hydration but also play an important role in the human diet and can be used as a potential source of probiotics with beneficial health effects. The fermentation process helps to increase the shelf life of beverages, improves the nutritional value, and enhances the sensory properties. Nowadays, there have been several developments in the probiotics fermented milk beverages. Therefore, this review aims to describe the health benefits of probiotics and their role in fermented dairy beverages.
