Abstract

Based on the analysis of an extensive corpus of historic and social science contributions, this paper analyzes the thesis of the authoritarian culture in Chile focusing on the portalian ideal-type. After describing its five constitutive elements, the paper discusses the theoretical consequences of this model for the conceptualization of authority as well as its limits as an interpretative tool of Chilean society today.
