Abstract
Higher Education Institutions (HEI) are an important indicator of a nation's knowledge resources, but are facing challenges in many regions of the world. In this context, distance education and online learning are effectively mentioned as options for the traditional learning model and in the current debate on the subject, the discussion on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Despite the apparent consensus in the literature on the impact of MOOCs on the business model of HEI, there seems to be divergence from the disruptive nature of this impact. Thus, based on the Disruptive Innovation Theory, the objective of this study was to evaluate, in an exploratory way, if the MOOCs present disruptive characteristics in the context of Brazilian higher education. To reach the proposed objective, an exploratory research was conducted with data from national MOOCs on the main national and international platforms. The results reinforce the conclusions that MOOCs will not break with traditional higher education. However, they point out the need for managers of mass HEIs, or who have few students and little tradition, to consider the phenomenon of MOOCs in their strategic analyzes.
