Abstract
This article explores the challenges of engaging persons with lived experience in co-production. Two qualitative case studies were conducted. Both cases involve co-production with persons who have a lived experience in poverty and social exclusion. The analysis shows that the main challenges for persons with lived experience are practical challenges, emotional challenges, the risk of going native, red tape challenges, challenges in terms of sustainability and integration challenges. The strategies reported to deal with these challenges include a differentiated approach, offering support and training, ensuring the appropriate level of autonomy, and building relationships and trust.
