Abstract

In 1998, the Large-scale Retail Store Locating Law was enacted, and it was enforced in June 2000 in place of the former commercial adjusting law. This change has a great effect on city planning, also. So, this paper aims to analyze how retail stores are administered through this new law. Through inquiry to local governments, 149 examples were gathered and analyzed. Entrances and exits to car parks are important and lane for turning was constructed in some cases. Local governments claimed in one fourth cases, and corresponding measures were taken by developers. Thus, this new law is administering its role to environments around retail stores. But, because there are some problems, we must not only improve this law, but also combine with other measures. © 2003, The City Planning Institute of Japan. All rights reserved.
