Abstract

This report presents the outcome of an investigation on the attitudes of the students of the Faculty of Education (UCM) towards statistics. A non-experimental-type study has been carried out with an ex-post-facto design and the sampling has been «non- random-available» type, with a sample of 855 subjects from the different degrees of the Faculty: pedagogy, social education and primary and early education, which covers the 73% of the enrolled students at the faculty for the 2013-14 course. The results state, in consistence with previous works, the fact that students approach statistics with a certain degree of uncertainty and their attitudes vary depending on previous experiences which they had had regarding statistics. It is also stated that students from Pedagogy and Social Education seem to have a similar profile but different to the profile of students from teacher training. An scale of attitudes towards statistics (Auzmendi, 1992) has also been applied, which allows the identification of 4 factors in the attittudes, which are related to anxiety/confidence, taste, utility and motivation.
