Abstract

Background: Depression can affect individuals across all age groups, educational levels, and social positions. Among medical students, stressors such as academic pressure, financial challenges, and body image concerns are major contributors to mental health disorders. This study aimed to examine the relationship between depression, measured using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Body Mass Index (BMI) among clerkship students in psychiatric rotations at Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah Hospital, Denpasar. Methods: Using a descriptive analytical cross-sectional design, data were collected from 111 participants through demographic questionnaires, BDI, and BMI measurements. Result: The findings revealed significant differences in depression levels across BMI categories (p = 0.036). Participants with extreme BMI values (either very low or very high) exhibited higher BDI scores compared to those with normal BMI. Notably, 50% of participants in the obese stage II category had severe depression, while the majority of normal BMI participants (95.7%) demonstrated minimal depression. Conclusion: This study supports the hypothesis that both obesity and underweight status are associated with increased depression risk due to factors such as body image concerns, systemic inflammation, and hormonal imbalances. However, the limited sample size in certain BMI categories, particularly obese stage II, may affect result reliability. Further research with larger and more balanced sample distributions is recommended to explore these correlations in depth.
