Dampak Media Massa terhadap Terbentuknya Opini Masyarakat: Film Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee and Jessica Wongso di Netflix

Abstract

Penelitian ini menjelajahi dampak media massa, khususnya Netflix dan serial dokumenter "Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee and Jessica Wongso", terhadap opini publik mengenai kasus kopi sianida dan sistem peradilan di Indonesia. Dengan menggunakan Teori Masyarakat Massa sebagai dasar teoretis, studi ini menggunakan metodologi yang melibatkan analisis dokumen, wawancara, dan survei online untuk memahami bagaimana Netflix mempengaruhi persepsi penonton terhadap kasus ini. Temuan dari analisis menunjukkan bahwa Netflix mempengaruhi opini publik melalui tiga fungsi utama yang diuraikan dalam Teori Masyarakat Massa: penegakan norma sosial, fungsi narkotisasi, dan pemberian status. Wawancara dengan penonton memberikan wawasan tentang pergeseran persepsi, dengan beberapa penonton meragukan validitas keputusan hukum terhadap Jessica dan yang lainnya melihat penjelasan Netflix sebagai upaya untuk mengunjungi kembali kasus yang tampaknya telah terselesaikan. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa platform media massa, seperti Netflix, memainkan peran penting dalam membentuk opini publik. Serial dokumenter seperti "Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee and Jessica Wongso" berpotensi mengubah perspektif penonton, menginterogasi norma sosial dan menciptakan efek narkotis yang dapat mempengaruhi reaksi masyarakat terhadap berbagai masalah, termasuk kasus kopi sianida dan sistem peradilan di Indonesia. Peneliti masa depan dapat lebih jauh mengeksplorasi dampak serupa dari penggambaran Netflix terhadap opini publik dalam konteks yang berbeda. Selain itu, masyarakat harus menumbuhkan kemampuan penilaian kritis mereka saat memproses informasi yang disajikan oleh media massa, mengakui kepentingan potensial, perspektif, dan bias yang melekat dalam penyajian berita. Utilizing the Mass Society Theory as a theoretical foundation, the study employs methodologies involving document analysis, interviews, and online surveys to decipher how Netflix influences the viewers' perceptions of the case. Findings from the analysis suggest that Netflix influences public opinion through three major functions outlined in the Mass Society Theory: enforcement of social norms, the narcotising function, and confering status. Interviews with viewers provided insights into shifts in perceptions, with some spectators doubting the validity of the legal decision against Jessica and others viewing Netflix's portrayal as an attempt to revisit a case that was seemingly resolved. The study concludes that mass media platforms, such as Netflix, play a critical role in shaping public opinion. Documentary series like "Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee and Jessica Wongso" can potentially alter viewers' perspective, interrogate social norms and create a narcotising effect that could influence societal reactions to various issues, including the cyanide coffee case and the justice system in Indonesia. Future researchers may further explore similar impacts of Netflix's portrayals on public opinion in different contexts. Additionally, the public should cultivate their critical assessment skills when processing information presented by mass media, acknowledging potential interests, perspectives, and biases inherent in the news portrayal.
